Part D

Medicare Part D is a prescription drug coverage provided by private companies. Medicare Part D coverage helps Medicare recipients pay for prescription drugs that are not covered by Original Medicare, Parts A and B. Part D is available to anyone enrolled in Original Medicare. You need to enroll in Medicare Part D separately from Parts A and B.

Medicare Part D plans may have monthly premiums. Your annual costs depend on the plan you choose, on how many drugs you take, or on what types of deductible and co-payments are associated with the plan you choose. It’s also possible to save on Part D costs through the LIS program.

Income Level

Your monthly premium for Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D) could be higher based on your income. This includes Part D coverage you get from a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, a Medicare Advantage Planwith prescription drug coverage (like an HMO or PPO), or a Medicare Cost Plan that includes Medicare prescription drug coverage, even if this Part D coverage is through your employer. If your modified adjusted gross income as reported on your IRS tax return from 2 years ago is more than $85,000 (individuals and married individuals filing separately) and $170,000 (married individuals filing jointly), you’ll have to pay extra for your Medicare prescription drug coverage.

Medicare Savings Program

This state program was created to help people with low income who qualify to enroll in Medicare to pay for the costs of its coverage. These programs help you to pay for your Medicare premiums; some programs also help you to pay for your Medicare Part A and Part B deductibles, copayments and coinsurance.

Low Income Subsidies

Eligible individuals who have limited income may qualify for a government program that helps pay for Medicare Part D prescription drug costs. The Medicare low-income subsidy, also known as the Medicare Extra Help program, can amount to estimated savings of $4,000 per year.

Qualified Medicare Beneficiary Program

If you are entitled to Medicare Part A coverage, are elderly or disabled, and have limited income, you may be eligible for the QMB program. If you are eligible, your state’s Medicaid program may pay for your Medicare Part B premium, Part A and Part B deductibles, and coinsurance requirements.
